3 Days in Rio de Janeiro: The Perfect Itinerary

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio's geography does a lot of the itinerary planning for you — a mountain with a statue, a peak with a cable car, and two of the world's most famous beaches, all within a short taxi ride of each other.

Day 1: Christ the Redeemer and Santa Teresa

Visit Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) early to beat both the heat and the crowds — the views over the city from Corcovado mountain are the main event. In the afternoon, wander Santa Teresa's cobblestone streets and colonial houses, then walk down the Selarón Steps (Escadaria Selarón), a mosaic staircase covered in tiles from around the world.

Day 2: Sugarloaf and the Beaches

Ride the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) for another angle on the city and bay, ideally timed for sunset. Spend the rest of the day between Copacabana and Ipanema, Rio's two most iconic beaches, each with a different atmosphere and crowd.

Day 3: Botanical Garden and Flamengo Park

Spend a slower morning at the Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico), then relax in Flamengo Park (Aterro do Flamengo) along the bay. If you have a fourth day, Tijuca National Park — the largest urban rainforest in the world — offers hiking with views back over the whole city.

Tips for Your Trip

  • Use official taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than walking between neighborhoods after dark, especially near Santa Teresa and Lapa.
  • Book Christ the Redeemer tickets online with a specific time slot — the vans up Corcovado mountain have limited capacity.
  • Copacabana and Ipanema each have a distinct crowd — Ipanema skews more upscale and local, Copacabana busier and more touristic.
