Rio's geography does a lot of the itinerary planning for you — a mountain with a statue, a peak with a cable car, and two of the world's most famous beaches, all within a short taxi ride of each other.
Rio's geography does a lot of the itinerary planning for you — a mountain with a statue, a peak with a cable car, and two of the world's most famous beaches, all within a short taxi ride of each other.
Visit Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) early to beat both the heat and the crowds — the views over the city from Corcovado mountain are the main event. In the afternoon, wander Santa Teresa's cobblestone streets and colonial houses, then walk down the Selarón Steps (Escadaria Selarón), a mosaic staircase covered in tiles from around the world.
Ride the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) for another angle on the city and bay, ideally timed for sunset. Spend the rest of the day between Copacabana and Ipanema, Rio's two most iconic beaches, each with a different atmosphere and crowd.
Spend a slower morning at the Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico), then relax in Flamengo Park (Aterro do Flamengo) along the bay. If you have a fourth day, Tijuca National Park — the largest urban rainforest in the world — offers hiking with views back over the whole city.
