The Perfect Weekend in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A Friday-evening arrival gives you two full days to take in Rio's best-known sights without rushing. This weekend plan mixes the classic viewpoints with beach time and a stroll through the city's most colorful streets, leaving room to slow down between stops.

Saturday

Start the morning at Sugarloaf Mountain, taking the cable car up while the light is still soft and the views over the bay are clearest. Come back down around midday and head to Copacabana for lunch near the beach, then spend a relaxed early afternoon on the sand or wandering along the boardwalk to Copacabana Fort for a look at its old cannons and harbor views. In the late afternoon, make your way to Santa Teresa, wandering its hilly cobblestone lanes before walking down to the Selarรณn Steps as the light turns golden. For dinner, stay in the Lapa area near the Arcos da Lapa, where there are plenty of relaxed restaurants and live music spilling out onto the street.

Sunday

Devote the morning to Christ the Redeemer, heading up early to avoid both crowds and the midday heat, and taking time at the top to enjoy the panoramic views over the city. Afterward, if the pace allows, drop into nearby Tijuca National Park for a short walk among the rainforest before heading back down. Spend the afternoon somewhere unhurried: the Botanical Garden is a good option for a slow walk among its palm-lined paths, or simply relax on the sand at Ipanema or Leblon, watching the sunset from the beach before wrapping up the trip with an easy dinner nearby.
