Varna and Burgas are Bulgaria's two big Black Sea hubs, each pairing beach time with a genuinely old city center — but they split sharply on what fills the rest of the day, from Roman ruins and museums to medieval day-trip towns just down the coast.
Varna is the deeper draw for history: the Varna Archaeological Museum, Naval Museum, and Bronze Age Varna Necropolis sit beside the Roman ruins of Odessos, plus the Archaeological Museum Guided Tours. Burgas counters with only the Burgas Archaeological Museum and Burgas Ethnographic Museum — solid but lighter.
Confusingly, both cities have a park called Sea Garden, but they serve different purposes. Varna's Sea Garden (Primorski Park) is a green promenade built around the Dancing Fountains Complex, while Burgas's Sea Garden backs directly onto Burgas Central Beach, with Water Sports & Activities right on the sand — Burgas is the real beach-first city.
Varna centers on Vasil Levski Square and the ornate Varna Cathedral, with Constanza Casino Square adding a second gathering point. Burgas is quieter and more devotional: the Burgas Cathedral (Sveta Bogoroditsa) and St. Cyril and Methodius Church anchor the center, backed by the leafy Central Park of Burgas.
Burgas wins this category outright: Sozopol Ancient Town and Nessebar Medieval Town are two of the Black Sea coast's best half-day trips, both a short ride away. Varna has no comparable satellite towns in its lineup, so it leans instead on the Archaeological Museum Guided Tours to go deeper into what's already in the city.
Choose Varna for deeper ancient history, from Odessos and the Varna Necropolis to its dedicated archaeological museum tours. Choose Burgas for the better beach base and easy access to Sozopol and Nessebar. Pair them: Varna for ruins, Burgas for sand and day trips.
