The Perfect Weekend in Prague

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague rewards a slow weekend more than a rushed one — its cobbled lanes, castle views, and riverside cafes are made for wandering rather than sprinting. Fly in Friday evening, settle into your hotel, and save your energy for two easy-paced days covering the castle district and the Old Town.

Saturday

Start the morning up at Prague Castle (Pražský Hrad), arriving early enough to explore the grounds before the tour groups arrive. Step inside the soaring St. Vitus Cathedral, then wander over to St. George's Basilica for its plainer, older Romanesque interior. If you enjoy museums, the Lobkowicz Palace Museum is a relaxed stop with an audio guide narrated by the family itself. Around midday, head downhill into Malá Strana (Lesser Town) to wander its quiet squares and pop into St. Nicholas Church, whose Baroque interior is worth the short visit. In the afternoon, cross the river slowly on foot over Charles Bridge (Karlův Most), pausing at the statues and street musicians rather than rushing across. For dinner, settle into one of the traditional pubs in Malá Strana or near the riverbank and order roast duck or goulash with a Czech pilsner, letting the evening wind down at an unhurried pace.

Sunday

Spend the morning in Old Town Square (Staroměstské Náměstí), timing your coffee so you catch the hourly show at the Astronomical Clock (Prague Orloj) mounted on the Old Town Bridge Tower side. Duck into the Church of Our Lady Before Týn for its striking twin spires and altar, then drift into Josefov (Jewish Quarter) to visit the Jewish Museum Prague and the Old-New Synagogue (Staronová Synagoga), one of Europe's oldest active synagogues. After lunch, choose a lighter option depending on your mood: the offbeat Museum of Communism or the playful Museum of Senses & Illusion Art Museum both make for a relaxed afternoon indoors. If the weather is good, ride the funicular up Petřín Hill & Tower instead for panoramic views over the city before your evening flight or train home.
