Venice has no cars, no metro, and is best experienced by walking and taking the vaporetto — this itinerary covers San Marco, the quieter districts, and the lagoon islands over three days.
Day 1: St. Mark's Square and the Grand Canal
Start at St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace on St. Mark's Square, arriving early to avoid the worst crowds. Cross the Rialto Bridge and take a Grand Canal Water Bus Tour to see the palazzos lining the water. In the evening, try a Traditional Gondola Ride through the quieter back canals.
Day 2: Murano, Burano and the Lagoon
Take the vaporetto out to Murano - Glassblowing Island to watch glassblowing demonstrations, then continue to Burano - Fishermen's Village for its famously colorful houses. Back in the city, wander Cannaregio District, one of Venice's least touristy neighborhoods, for dinner.
Day 3: Dorsoduro and a Day Trip
Spend the morning in Dorsoduro District, visiting the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Gallerie dell'Accademia. If you have a fourth day, Verona - Shakespeare's City or Padua (Padova) - University Town are both an easy train ride from Venice's Santa Lucia station.
Tips for Your Trip
- Venice charges a day-tripper entry fee on peak dates — check before you go if you're not staying overnight.
- Skip the vaporetto for short hops in San Marco; walking is often faster than waiting for a boat.
- Restaurants directly on St. Mark's Square are the most expensive in the city — walk a few bridges away for better food.
