Annual Events & Festivals

Carnaval (February/March): Week-long celebration before Lent featuring parades, costumes, live music, and street parties. Downtown Cancun hosts main events with colorful floats, dancing, and traditional food. Similar to Mardi Gras with Mexican flair.

Semana Santa / Easter Week (March/April): Busiest domestic tourism week when Mexican families vacation. Beaches and hotels at capacity with higher prices. Religious processions in downtown alongside beach parties. Book months in advance or avoid this period.

Día de la Independencia (September 15-16): Mexican Independence Day celebrated with El Grito ceremony, fireworks, mariachi music, traditional foods, and patriotic decorations. Main celebrations downtown at Palacio Municipal. Street parties and concerts throughout Cancun.

Day of the Dead / Día de Muertos (November 1-2): Mexico's most important cultural celebration honoring deceased loved ones. Elaborate altars (ofrendas) displayed in hotels, restaurants, and homes. Xcaret Park hosts spectacular Festival de Tradiciones de Vida y Muerte. Face painting, pan de muerto, marigold flowers, and cemetery visits. Moving cultural experience.

Caribbean Festival (Last week of November): Celebrates Caribbean culture with music, dance, food, and art from Caribbean nations. Free concerts, cultural exhibitions, and culinary events throughout Cancun.

Guadalupe-Reyes Marathon (December 12-January 6): Unofficial Mexican holiday season starting with Virgin of Guadalupe Day and ending with Three Kings Day. Continuous festivities including posadas (nightly processions), Christmas, New Year's, and Epiphany. Peak tourism season.

Spring Break (March): American college students descend on Cancun for legendary beach parties, club nights, and pool parties. Hotel Zone transforms into massive party zone. Love it or avoid it - no middle ground. Book early or stay downtown for quieter experience.

Cancun Jazz Festival (Various dates): International jazz artists perform at Moon Palace resort and other venues. Mix of established legends and emerging talent. Often free or low-cost admission.
