1 Day in Amsterdam: How to See the Best of It

Amsterdam, Netherlands

One day in Amsterdam is enough for the canals and the essential museums, but not much else. This itinerary deliberately skips the Hermitage, NEMO, and the outer neighborhoods to focus on a tight loop through the historic center and the Museum Quarter.

Day 1: Canals and Icons

Start early at the Anne Frank House, booking a timed entry slot in advance to avoid the midday queue, then step outside to admire the nearby Westerkerk tower before wandering south through the Nine Streets for a coffee and a look at the boutique-lined stretch of the Amsterdam Canal Ring. By late morning head to Dam Square to see the Royal Palace Amsterdam, then continue toward the Museum Quarter for a midday visit to either the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum — pick one rather than rushing both. In the afternoon, walk back toward the center via the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge), pausing on the water for photos of the canal houses. Wrap up the day with dinner and drinks around Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein, both lively into the evening.
