2 Days in Amsterdam: The Essential Itinerary

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Two full days is enough time to see Amsterdam's historic core, its most famous canals, and one world-class museum without feeling rushed. This itinerary spreads the essential sights across both days so you get a natural mix of walking, culture, and canalside downtime.

Day 1: Historic Center and the Canal Ring

Start at Dam Square, the city's historic heart, and step inside the Royal Palace Amsterdam right on the square. From there walk to the Westerkerk, whose tower is one of the best-known silhouettes on the skyline, then continue next door to the Anne Frank House — book your timed ticket well in advance since this sells out fastest of anything in the city. Spend the afternoon wandering the Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) for boutique shopping, then follow the Amsterdam Canal Ring on foot or by canal boat past gabled houses to the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge), especially pretty around sunset. Close the day with dinner and drinks around Leidseplein, the city's liveliest nightlife square.

Day 2: Museums and the Old Side

Devote the morning to the Rijksmuseum, the Netherlands' flagship museum and home to Rembrandt's The Night Watch — arriving at opening time helps you beat the tour groups. If you have extra energy, the neighboring Van Gogh Museum makes a good add-on before lunch. In the afternoon head into the old city to the Rembrandt House Museum, then the atmospheric Oude Kerk (Old Church) and the nearby Portuguese Synagogue. Finish at the waterfront with the family-friendly NEMO Science Museum, then stroll back through Kalverstraat for shopping and end the trip with dinner around Rembrandtplein.
