The Perfect Weekend in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, Netherlands

A Friday-evening arrival gives you two unhurried days to soak in Amsterdam's canals, museums, and cafe culture without rushing. This weekend keeps a relaxed pace, mixing a couple of world-class museums with plenty of time to simply wander the canal rings.

Saturday

Start the morning with a stroll along the Amsterdam Canal Ring, pausing at the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) for photos before making your way toward Dam Square and the stately Royal Palace Amsterdam. From there, wander into the Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) for boutique shopping and coffee, then pop into the Westerkerk to see its tower. In the afternoon, choose one museum to enjoy at a leisurely pace, either the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum, rather than trying to cram in both. Round out the day with dinner around Leidseplein, where there is no shortage of cozy restaurants for an easy evening meal.

Sunday

Ease into the day with a quiet visit to the Anne Frank House (booking ahead is worth it) or, for something less crowded, the atmospheric Ons Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic) hidden inside a canal house. Take a slow walk through the old center past the Oude Kerk (Old Church) and the Portuguese Synagogue, both steeped in the city's history. If you still have energy for one more stop, the family-friendly NEMO Science Museum is a fun detour with rooftop views over the city. Close out the weekend with a relaxed wander through Rembrandtplein, then a farewell coffee or drink before heading home.
