The Perfect Weekend in Lisbon

Lisbon, Portugal

A Friday-evening arrival gives you two full, relaxed days to soak up Lisbon's hills, tiles, and river light. This weekend keeps the pace easy, pairing the riverside monuments of Belém with a slow wander through the old quarters and a proper night out in Bairro Alto.

Saturday

Start the morning in Belém, giving yourself plenty of time to wander rather than rush. Walk along the river to the Belém Tower, then continue to the Monument to the Discoveries for views back toward the 25 de Abril Bridge. Spend a leisurely hour at the Jerónimos Monastery next door, and if you still have appetite for art afterward, drop into the MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology or the Berardo Collection Museum, both an easy stroll away. Take a long lunch break somewhere by the water before heading back into town in the afternoon. In the evening, settle in for dinner at a traditional tasca in Alfama, ideally one with a fado performance, and let the night wind down slowly among the narrow lanes.

Sunday

Sleep in a little, then spend the morning climbing up to Castelo de São Jorge for panoramic views over the rooftops, with no need to hurry between the ramparts and viewpoints. Wander down through Alfama at your own pace and pause at the Lisbon Cathedral on the way. After a relaxed lunch, head toward the center to browse Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio, then drift over to Rossio Square. If energy allows, duck into São Roque Church before an early evening stroll through Bairro Alto, where you can pick a small restaurant for a final dinner before the trip wraps up.
