1 Day in Istanbul: How to See the Best of It

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul spans two continents and centuries of empires, but one day is only enough for its absolute icons. This itinerary sticks to the historic core around Sultanahmet and a quick hop across the water, skipping the museums, further-out mosques, and neighborhood wandering that a longer stay would allow.

Day 1: The Historic Peninsula and Beyond

Arrive early at Hagia Sophia to beat the tour groups and take in its vast dome before crossing the square to the Blue Mosque. Walk the open-air Hippodrome of Constantinople between the two, then duck underground into the Basilica Cistern to see its forest of columns. By midday, head into Topkapi Palace for the sultans' quarters and treasury, then grab lunch nearby before diving into the covered chaos of the Grand Bazaar for an hour of browsing and haggling. In the afternoon, cross the Galata Bridge and climb Galata Tower for panoramic views over the Bosphorus and the old city skyline. From there, stroll down bustling Istiklal Avenue toward Taksim Square, stopping for a coffee or a bite along the way. As evening falls, head back toward the water for a sunset view over the Bosphorus, watching the domes and minarets of the historic peninsula light up.
