3 Days in Istanbul: The Perfect Itinerary

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul straddles two continents, but nearly everything worth seeing on a first visit sits in the old city of Sultanahmet and across the water in Beyoğlu — this itinerary keeps you in those two areas plus a Bosphorus cruise.

Day 1: Sultanahmet, the Old City

Start at Hagia Sophia, then cross to the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) — both are steps apart in Sultanahmet (Old City). Visit Topkapi Palace in the afternoon, then descend into the Basilica Cistern, an eerie underground reservoir lined with columns. Finish at the Grand Bazaar for dinner-hour shopping.

Day 2: The Bosphorus and Beyoğlu

Take a Bosphorus Sunset Cruise or ferry to see the city from the water — Dolmabahçe Palace is a good stop along the shore. Cross to Beyoğlu and walk Istiklal Avenue up to Taksim Square. In the evening, try a Turkish Bath (Hammam) Experience for something distinctly local.

Day 3: Markets and a Day Trip

Browse the Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar) in the morning, then wander Karaköy and Balat's colorful streets. If you have a fourth day, the Princes' Islands (Büyükada) — a short ferry ride with no cars, only horse carriages and bikes — makes a relaxed escape from the city.
