2 Days in Vienna: The Essential Itinerary

Vienna, Austria

Two days in Vienna gives you enough time to combine grand imperial history with the citys elegant townscape without feeling rushed. This route covers the historic center on day one and the palace circuit on day two, mixing must-see landmarks with a stop at one of the citys great art collections.

Day 1: Imperial Old Town

Begin in the heart of the Innere Stadt at the Hofburg Imperial Palace, the former seat of the Habsburg monarchy, then walk a few minutes to the soaring Gothic spire of St. Stephens Cathedral. From there, wander the elegant shopping streets of Graben and Kärntner Strasse, pausing at the quiet square of Am Hof and the domed Baroque interior of Peterskirche. In the afternoon, dedicate a couple of hours to the Albertina, whose collection of graphic art and modern masterpieces makes it one of Viennas top museums. End the day at the Vienna State Opera, admiring the facade even if you are not catching a performance.

Day 2: Palaces and the Ringstrasse

Devote the morning to Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs, allowing time to stroll its formal gardens. After lunch, head to Belvedere Palace, whose Baroque halls and grounds are as striking as the artwork inside. Spend the rest of the afternoon tracing the grand Ringstrasse boulevard, taking in the neo-Gothic Rathaus, the columned Parliament Building, and the twin-spired Votivkirche. Finish at Karlskirche, whose green dome and columned entrance make for a memorable last stop.
