Annual Events & Festivals in Xi'an
Xi'an celebrates diverse festivals reflecting its multicultural heritage and modern Chinese culture:
- Spring Festival/Chinese New Year (Jan-Feb): The most important celebration with lion dances, lantern displays, temple fairs, and family gatherings. Expect massive crowds and temporary attraction closures. However, temple fairs (庙会) offer authentic festive experiences with food, performances, and entertainment.
- Lantern Festival (15th day of lunar new year): Colorful lanterns illuminate temples, parks, and streets. Tang West Market and Big Goose Pagoda area host spectacular displays with traditional performances and street food.
- Qingming Festival (April 4-6): Traditional tomb-sweeping day when families honor ancestors. Less touristy but provides cultural insight into Chinese customs and traditions.
- Dragon Boat Festival (5th lunar month, May-Jun): Dragon boat races, traditional Zongzi rice dumplings, and cultural performances celebrating ancient poet Qu Yuan.
- Mid-Autumn Festival (15th lunar month, Sep-Oct): Family reunions celebrated with mooncakes and lanterns. Beautiful nighttime displays in parks and temple complexes across the city.
- National Day (Oct 1-7): Extended holiday celebrating PRC founding. Massive crowds and temporary attraction closures. Avoid during this week unless specifically interested in patriotic celebrations.
- Xi'an International Performance Art Festival (September-October): Contemporary music, dance, theater and performance art events at venues throughout the city.
