Optimal Travel Seasons
The best time to visit Cairo is during the cooler months from October to April, when temperatures are pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Season-by-Season Breakdown:
- October-November (Fall): Excellent weather with temperatures 20-28°C (68-82°F). Less crowded than winter peak. Ideal for pyramid visits and outdoor exploration.
- December-February (Winter/Peak Season): Most popular tourist season with temperatures 14-22°C (57-72°F). Expect crowds at major attractions but comfortable weather. Evenings can be cool; bring layers. Higher hotel prices during Christmas and New Year.
- March-April (Spring): Pleasant temperatures 18-28°C (64-82°F). Occasional sandstorms (khamsin winds) possible in March-April. Good balance of weather and fewer crowds.
- May-September (Summer/Low Season): Very hot with temperatures 28-40°C (82-104°F), sometimes exceeding 40°C. Best avoided unless you handle extreme heat well. Advantages include lowest hotel rates, minimal crowds, and locals take vacations. If visiting in summer, plan indoor activities during midday heat (10am-4pm) and outdoor sightseeing early morning or evening.
Ramadan consideration: During the Islamic holy month (dates vary yearly), many restaurants close during daylight hours, and site hours may change. However, evenings come alive with special meals and celebrations.
