Electricity & Plugs in Dublin

Practical travel guide for Dublin, Ireland

Electricity & Plugs in Dublin

Electricity & Adapters

Voltage: Ireland uses 230V/50Hz electrical system, same as UK and most of Europe.

Plug Type: Type G (UK-style three rectangular prongs). This is different from continental European two-pin plugs.

Adapters Needed: Visitors from North America, Asia, Australia, and most other regions need adapters. Continental Europeans also need UK-style adapter despite being in Europe.

Where to Buy Adapters

  • Before You Travel: Amazon, travel shops at home generally cheaper than buying in Dublin
  • Dublin Airport: Available in airport shops but expensive (€10-15)
  • City Center: Boots pharmacy, Argos, hardware stores, convenience stores (€5-10)
  • Hotels: Many hotels lend adapters at reception (ask); some rooms have USB charging ports

Voltage Converters

Most modern electronics (phones, laptops, camera chargers) have built-in voltage converters (100-240V) and only need plug adapters. Check device specifications before travel.

High-wattage items (hair dryers, curling irons, electric shavers) may need voltage converters if not dual-voltage. Consider buying cheap hair dryer in Dublin rather than bringing converter.

USB Charging

USB charging increasingly available: many hotel rooms have USB ports, cafés offer charging points, buses equipped with USB sockets. Bring USB cables for convenient charging without adapters.

Practical Tips

  • Bring multiple adapters if traveling with several devices
  • Universal adapters with UK setting work for Ireland
  • Check appliance ratings: Look for '100-240V' labels on devices
  • Irish plugs have switches: Remember to flip wall switch 'ON' – common oversight for visitors
  • Fuses in plugs: Irish plugs contain fuses (usually 3A or 13A); if adapter stops working, fuse may need replacing
