Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom and a 19th-century whaling port, Lahaina's Front Street was devastated by a wildfire in August 2023 that destroyed much of the historic district, including many wooden storefronts, and claimed over 100 lives. Long-term rebuilding is underway, with some businesses and cultural sites reopening in stages. A former sugar plantation town turned bohemian surf hub, Paia sits on Maui's North Shore near legendary windsurfing spot Hookipa Beach. Its main street is lined with colorful wooden storefronts housing boutiques, art galleries, and some of the island's best casual restaurants and bakeries. Paia is also the traditional starting point for the Road to Hana, making it a natural stop for gas, snacks, and a morning coffee.
South Maui's master-planned luxury resort area, Wailea is defined by manicured grounds, high-end hotels, championship golf courses, and an upscale open-air shopping center. A flat, scenic coastal path connects its string of beaches, making it easy to walk between resorts without a car. At the end of the winding Road to Hana, this small, remote town feels decades removed from Maui's resort areas, with no traffic lights, few chain businesses, and a strong sense of traditional Hawaiian community. Hana Bay, the historic Hasegawa General Store, and nearby black-sand Waianapanapa State Park make it a worthwhile overnight stop rather than a rushed day trip for travelers with extra time.
