Tenerife's Carnival de Santa Cruz (February/March, dates shift yearly with Lent) is one of the largest in the world, second only to Rio de Janeiro's, with elaborate costume parades, a Carnival Queen contest, and street parties lasting over two weeks.
The Corpus Christi flower and sand carpets in La Orotava (May/June) transform the town's streets into elaborate temporary murals made from volcanic sand and flower petals.
Romería de San Roque in Garachico (August) and the Bajada de la Virgen pilgrimage traditions honor local patron saints with processions and traditional dress. National holidays (Spanish Constitution Day, Epiphany, Easter week) also apply, closing most shops and municipal offices.
